RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Sail Prep course

A RYA Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence is often the ultimate aim of skippers. It is a well known, highly respected qualification worldwide, proving your experience and competence as a skipper.

This course is for those who hold the RYA Coastal Skipper course completion certificate and who are looking to undertake the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal Exam.

Course content

Students should have build up their knowledge and skills exceeding the level of RYA Coastal Skipper.

The prep course is conducted by our Chief Instructor personally, a fully qualified Yachtmaster Ocean Instructor. During the 5 day course he will assess your ability and coach you in all the disciplines required to pass the RYA exam.

You will take command of the yacht on passages by day and night and practice advanced yacht handling techniques under power and sail including the Man-Over-Board recovery drill. In addition, we will brush up and sharpen your skills in passage planning, meteorology, safety at sea, maintenance, navigation, pilotage, knowledge of the International Collision Regulations and "blind" navigation.

At the end of each day, you will be given a debrief to coach you towards reaching the standard for a successful examination.

Each student who wishes to take the exam will be examined for 6-10 hours by an independent RYA Yachtmaster Examiner (examination fee payable to the RYA) as they skipper the yacht on short passages and complete various demonstrations of skippering techniques.

Ability after the course

After succesfully passing the examination, you will receive the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence.

Supporting courses

We recommend following the RYA Diesel Engine and the RYA Radar Operator course before participating at the Yachtmaster exam.

You must hold a valid First Aid certificate and a VHF license to enrol in the Yachtmaster Coastal Prep course. We recommend the Short Range VHF Certificate, which can be obtained after following either our online or the classroom course, and the SRC examination.

If you require more miles you might be interested in joining one of our mile builder trips or become a trainee on a C-MASTERS yacht delivery trip.

The prep course is available as 5 consecutive days. The examination can take place during the following 2 days.

Previous experience:

You should have logged at least:

30 days sea time (of which 2 as skipper)
800 nautical miles of which at least half on tidal waters
12 night hours

For holders of the Coastal Skipper practical course certificate this requirement is reduced to:

20 days sea time (2 as skipper)
400 recorded miles of which at least half on tidal waters
12 night hours

Assumed knowledge:

Your knowledge of coastal navigation, diesel engine, radar and meteorology should be to the standard of the RYA Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster Offshore theory course.

We highly recommend doing the RYA Radar and RYA Diesel Engine course.

You must hold a valid First Aid certificate and VHF marine radio licence.

1520 euro for the 5 days prep course
460 euro for the use of the yacht during the 2 days of your examination, including the travel cost of your RYA examiner

Next steps

After successfully passing the exam, we recommend extending your knowledge with a selection of our C-MASTERclasses, in particular on the use of radar, knowledge of diesel engines and on passage planning.

The Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence can be commercially endorsed for anyone with ambition to find work as a professional crew member.
